Getting There
Less than two hours from Sydney and 90 minutes from Newcastle, the Broke Fordwich area is in the southwest corner of the mid Hunter Valley. The Hunter Valley is quite spread out so it is important to have transport of some kind. There is a small airport in Cessnock for light aircraft only. The closest commercial airports are Newcastle (1 hour) and Sydney (2 hours). Hire cars can be picked up from both airports or in the Hunter itself. There are companies that run transfers from both the airports. There is a great bus service to and from Sydney each day called Wine Country xPress. It takes about 2.5 hours and leaves Sydney about 8.30am returning at around 4.30pm. For bookings please ring Rover Coaches on 02 4990 1699 or www.rovercoaches.com.au.
If driving from Sydney then there are two routes. One is via the freeway, the other has winding roads and stunning scenery and takes the same journey time so we suggest that you travel at least one way by the scenic route through Wollombi.
Locating the houses from the Broke Village Store
Maranda Country House - 68 Wollombi Street - If you are standing at the store looking across to the fire station - turn right and head north along Wollombi Street towards Singleton. Travel about 1 kilometer until you see Pickled and Pitted & Monkey Place on the left hand side. We are opposite on the right hand side of the road.
Bonn Abbey - 25 Nelson Street - if you are standing at the store looking across to the fire station - Turn left and immediately left again travelling East towards Pokolbin. Travel about 500 metres and you will see an old service station on the corner of Nelson Street. Turn into Nelson Street and Bonn Abbey is towards the end of the street on the left hand side surrounded by pepper trees and next to a small gravel track called Adair Street.
